OVERVIEW

Jenner & Block’s Government Controversies and Public Policy Litigation Practice, led by former United States Department of Justice Associate Attorney General Thomas J. Perrelli, former Associate Deputy Attorney General at the United States Department of Justice and former Associate White House Counsel Emily M. Loeb, and former Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian Hauck, brings to bear lawyers who have extensive experience managing complex issues within the Executive Branch and the firm’s litigation and counseling expertise to turn a seemingly intractable crisis into a manageable problem with solutions in sight. The practice group focuses on advising companies, corporate executives and boards, and government institutions on the most controversial problems they may ever face at the intersection of law, law enforcement and government regulation. The practice group draws on Jenner & Block’s strength and depth as a premier litigation firm and its internationally recognized white collar practice to provide a full suite of services to organizations facing multifaceted problems. This includes creating risk management strategies, conducting internal investigations, and advising on crisis management for businesses and organizations facing problems that draw the attention of the state and federal civil and criminal law enforcement authorities, government regulators, inspectors general, congressional committees, state legislators and the media.

The Policy Advisor serves as a strategic partner within the Government Controversies and Public Policy Litigation Practice Group , providing high-level policy expertise and analytical support. This role involves spearheading the thought leadership program, offering in-depth policy analysis, and advising attorneys and clients on emerging regulatory and legislative developments.

Key responsibilities include conducting advanced legislative and regulatory research, synthesizing complex legal and policy issues, developing strategic client materials, and providing actionable insights on government activities. The Policy Advisor will play a pivotal role in business development by identifying policy trends, assessing risks and opportunities, and contributing to thought leadership initiatives.

Success in this role requires a proactive and analytical mindset, exceptional writing and communication skills, and the ability to navigate high-pressure environments while managing multiple priorities. The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of federal legislative processes, regulatory frameworks, and public affairs strategy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Work closely with the Business Development and Marketing teams to spearhead thought leadership for the Government Controversies group.
  • Facilitate the process from idea generation to publication, including drafting and editing thought leadership as needed.
  • Generate potential opportunities for client outreach and profile-raising activities.
  • Collaborate with the Business Development department to provide related materials as needed, including RFPs, client outreach, etc.
  • Work closely with the Policy Assistant to ensure a consistent and effective news monitoring program.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of developments in key legislative bodies.
  • Analyze and summarize legislative activity, predict future trends in relevant legislation, and conduct background research to support client goals.
  • Provide detailed reports on legislative developments, Member statements, and committee activity.
  • Collaborate with other practice groups for legislative analysis and research.
  • Contribute to the preparation of presentations and other client-facing materials.
  • Provide other support on billable matters as needed.
  • Assist co-chairs with primary team strategic and research needs.
  • Assist with organizing internal meetings and client events as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • A Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in advocacy, political campaigns, government service, or a related field. Capitol Hill or Executive Branch work experience preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer skills.
  • Deep understanding of U.S. federal government operations, including Congress, the Executive Branch, and regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to track and analyze legislative developments and summarize complex information effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle administrative and organizational tasks with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.

The anticipated pay range for this role is $65,000 to $100,000 in Washington, DC. The actual offered rate for this position will be determined based on several factors, including qualifications and experience, geographic location, education, external market data, and consideration of internal equity.
